Practical concepts for eliminating business misconduct in the contemporary society--My opinion . Small business 247
We all know that ethics are personal decisions on the rights he should do and wrongs he should avoid for effective representation in his business. Good. But what if a business refused to make or abide by that decision?
In line with number 1 above here is a concept, known as the B.O.R.N Code concept; a platform aimed at checking and controlling attitudes, behaviors and conduct of all sellers, business owners and entrepreneurs all over Nigeria. It should be used to fight unethical business management in our country. [Learn more about business registration in Nigeria – CAC]

I suggest we should create what is known as Business Ownership Registration Number (B.O.R.N). And this should get linked to the Banks’ Verification Number (BVN) and with the National Identification Number (NIN). This will be an optimum identification in Nigeria against fraud and other misconducts in businesses and should be compulsory to anyone who wants to trade in this country. [Official NIN Portal – NIMC] This concept is most important especially in this online business era. It will make all businesses in Nigeria get registered and can eliminate secrecy and any insecurity in the country.
What is B.O.R.N? It is a code or digits issued to any registered business in Nigeria. It is aimed at security of both business owners and their prospects. It is not an alternative to BVN or NIN, but for business ownership recognition only. [Central Bank of Nigeria – BVN Information]
What can B.O.R.N do for us? Important question, one might ponder about the importance of registering his tiny business that has not even been known in his immediate environment and find none. But below are the benefits you can get by registering your business through the BORN code concept:
Restore ethical business management into our country markets. [Ethics & Compliance Initiative – Global Standards]
Nigeria, as a country with too many entrepreneurs, can now ascertain the number of entrepreneurs they have and be able to control how things are done. [SMEDAN – Supporting MSMEs in Nigeria]
Our citizens travelling abroad can no longer be regarded as criminals. They can be verified with their BORN details to every organization they enter all over the world and be able to settle with confidence.
Security of life and properties of citizens and foreigners can be assured, as brutality of retaliations following unethical conducts shall be reduced to the naught.
Unethical business management can be controlled and curbed with corporate effort and willing commitment. [EFCC – Report Fraud & Unethical Practices]
Everyone shall have the sense of belonging to this country.
We can have more liberation in this world as an independent nation, ending some of these senseless limitations and restrictions against our freedom. My dream country to live is my ideal Nigeria.

How can B.O.R.N work?
These are things we shall do to make the elimination of unethical business possible through the BORN code concept.
1. Register every business for free: This registration will help people bring up their business plans and other documents that will enable that business to have a government-approved BORN code. The person will be regarded as an entrepreneur and can be free to trade anywhere in the country, and travel abroad—all for security. When different businesses are registered in the government register, any unethical business act like fraud, misrepresentation, or scam can be detected with their BORN code. [CAC Online Registration Portal]
Government should remove pressures of all kinds from entrepreneurs and encourage each and every business person to register for free. Whoever refuses to register will be banned from bank transactions and other basic transactions. Free registration can be the best strategic approach. Everyone who trades, buys, or sells any product should register. People can register online on their phones, cyber cafés, or their local government of NIN, with correct information or never.
2. Only business owners who have BVN and NIN can be registered. Yes. This ensures data authenticity and nationality. It does not mean the BORN code should be kept secret like other data, but to make sure the representer is a qualified entrepreneur. Foreigners must provide all required papers and nationality documents.
3. Only one person can represent a business. The representer is regarded as the owner and can be held accountable for any business practice.
4. Create a verification number for B.O.R.N codes. For example, a short code like
12340, made known to the public to text the BORN code provided by a prospect. SMS, free of charge. The verification system replies with key details: owner’s name, business name, location, products/services, and security status. [Nigerian Communications Commission – Short Codes]5. Copy of business plan is necessary: The representer should state what the business offers along with mission and vision statements. These will appear in the verification reply.
6. Every registered business shall be issued a copy of the national law on business crime and unethical practices. This should be in soft form and free. [Laws of Nigeria – Business & Commerce]
7. Establish a body or AI-powered software to track and detain crooks. Unethical practices shall be removed totally if attention is paid to people’s reports. With a valid BORN code, scams can be detected and imposters detained. [Nigeria Police – Report Cybercrime]
8. Punish offenders: One of the most tedious catastrophes facing this country might be that when people do something that deserves punishment, they will be set free because of their status. But immediately an innocent one is confined, no more seeing the sky again. If offenders are punished appropriately, our country will move smoothly.
9. Remain good people: Let us stop seeing ourselves as the worst set of people in the world and remain good. Those people we think are better than us—if you can enter them, you will see that you are better than them. We are good people, Nigeria. One of the most shocking feelings I have in this life is hearing people say that Nigeria is bad. Anyone that says so is telling a serious lie.
What shall be required of every business representer while registering?
1. Passport (compulsory)
2. Business email
3. Personal email (depending on size and type of business)
4. BVN
5. NIN
6. Voter’s card number

Now we are going to move into the major aspect of our conversation: the ethical values for business success and prosperity. Read with confidence, get dictionaries, so that you will understand better. Also use your conscience to judge the ideas for better results. These are the ethical values expected from all business administrators for effective management and successful outcome.
